Metal Halide ballasts are great for lamps such that operate as probe start or pulse start (PSMH) -- constant-wattage autotransformer (CWA), high-reactance autotransformer (HX-HPF), constant-wattage isolated transformer (CWI), and regulated lag (magnetically regulated) ballasts.
- HX-HPF - Are bigger and heavier due to their additional coils that allow for lamp starting from supply voltages.
- CWA - The most common used ballasts (also known as lead style) in Metal Halide lamps 175 watts or higher
- CWI - Similar to CWA but differs by having an electrical isolation between primary and secondary windings. Very common on Canadian market.
- Pulse Start - Only available in 277 volts and uses only a single coil to reduces lamp wattage by 8 percent and cuts power loss in half.
- Regulated lag - Most sophisticated designed ballast and provides highest power regulation for lamps.
